Rina Gunter

Gunter Attorneys was established in 2011 by Rina Gunter.  Rina is a South African patent attorney and an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.  She holds a science degree in metallurgy and chemistry, as well as a law degree.  She has 20 years’ experience in the fields of organic- and inorganic chemistry, material science, mining, mineral processing, water purification, food processing, construction and agricultural chemistry technologies.Rina Gunter She specialises in drafting, filing and prosecuting of local and international patent, design and trade-mark applications, on behalf of both South African and foreign based applicants.  Her expertise extends to development contracts and licensing of intellectual property rights.

In 2010 Rina was singled out as one of three finalists in CEO Magazine’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Awards (Legal Sector).  She is a regular radio guest presenter, and presenter at local and international IP seminars.

In her private capacity, Rina is the chairperson and director of a non-profit company tasked with managing the residential estate in which she lives.  Rina is a nature lover and conservationist and is a co-founding member and chairperson of “Friends of Moreletaspruit”, a non-profit organization that works towards re-establishing 21 hectares of wetland as a nature reserve.  Rina is married and has two young daughters.

Mike du Toit

Mike du Toit is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, a qualified Trademark Practitioner and senior adjudicator of domain name disputes in terms of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, 2002 ( ECT Act) and regulations.  He has more than 20 years’ experience in intellectual property law and is a former head of the trademark litigation department in John & Kernick and Bowman Gilfillan Inc.  He is also a fMike du Toitounder and former head of the Intellectual Property Department of Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs.

Mike served on the council of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) for several years, is a past President of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL), and was chairman of their ADR committee that set up the domain name dispute resolution platform for the resolution of domain name disputes in terms of the ECT Act and regulations.  He has extensive experience in the creation, protection and enforcement of clients’ rights, not only in South Africa, but across the African continent and the rest of the world.  He has litigated extensively in the High Court of South Africa, in front of the Registrar of Trade Marks, Registrar of Companies and in the Advertising Standards Authority.  Mike has advised a number of South African and international companies on strategic intellectual property issues ranging from licensing issues, clearances searches, due diligences and mergers and acquisitions.

Magdalien van der Westhuizen

Magdalien is a South African patent attorney and an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.  She holds a Masters’ degree in Biochemistry, as well as a law degree.  She has 2 years’ experience as researcher in the fields of protein magdalien-van-der-westhuizentechnology, applied biochemistry, biocatalysis and enzymology; and 3 years’ experience in patent filing and prosecution of local and international patent applications on behalf of both South African and foreign based clients. She values a high level of professional service.
