David Gilson

David is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, a registered South African patent attorney and notary public, as well as a registered patent agent in Malawi. David has more than 30 years’ experience in intellectual property law and is the former head of the patent agency department of Spoor & Fisher. His specific expertise lies in the filing and formal prosecution of patent and design applications in South Africa, as well as in other southern African jurisdictions such as Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho and Mozambique.
David is an honorary member of South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL), and has previously served on the council of this organisation. He is currently a member of the patent and design law committee of the SAIIPL, and is one of the general editors of International Pharmaceutical Law and Practice, a LexisNexis publication. During 2023 he was engaged by the Swiss-South African Intellectual Property Project (SSAIP), a joint venture between the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) and the South African Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), to undertake training of CIPC patent and design staff.
